In the face of current and predicted climate change, building forest and woodland resilience is vital – We can offer strategic and tactical strategies to mitigate risks and facilitate forest adaption.
It’s important for forests and woodlands to be financially sustainable, as well as biologically – We have immense experience in designing and delivering progressive silvicultural strategies to achieve clients’ objectives of management.
A commendable aim is producing high quality and high value timber whilst also delivering high levels of biodiversity and a high-quality landscape – Having been managing forests and woodlands in the region for over 25 years, our achievement of this target can be demonstrated.

The range of agri-environment consultancy services offered includes:
- Carrying out farmland habitat surveys and assessments including grasslands, hedges, wetlands, etc
- Applications for the full range of support schemes and grants including Countryside Stewardship and the Sustainable Farming Incentive
- Advice on the transition between schemes old and new and the stacking of grants in order to maximise support for conservation management

Continuous Cover Forestry – Too good to be true?
Earlier in 2024 David was invited to be involved in the latest of the series of films about the future of Britain’s forests by environmentalist and film-maker Charly Le Marchant (Pocketfullofacorns) and Saw-Miller and Timber Merchant Tom Barnes (Vastern Timber). Charly and Tom have been making films together under the banner Wood for the Trees since 2019 and have covered a wide range of topics from breeding trees for the timber industry to agroforestry.
During 2024 Wood for the Trees has produced a (two part) film on Continuous Cover Forestry in which David is interviewed at Stourhead. Both films are available to watch on YouTube. You can find them via the links below.
If you don’t know already, Continuous Cover Forestry is a method of timber production that avoids clear felling. By adopting selection felling, recruiting mixed species regeneration and developing vertical structures, the resulting forest or woodland is multifunctional, and capable of providing harvestable timber products, a complexity of habitat and a profitable outcome.
YouTube Videos:
Part 1 - Biodiversity in irregular forests
Filmed at Stourhead (Western) Estate - with David Pengelly BSc(Hons) FICFor looks at what CCF is, how it differs from conventional clear cutting and what this means for biodiversity as well as the long term sustainability of the productivity of the forest.
Part 2 - Timber production in a time of changing climate
Filmed at Stourhead (Western) Estate - with David Pengelly BSc(Hons) FICFor looks at how financially viable CCF is, why forest owners should consider it and what Government and the Timber industry could do to support it.
